Ideally,  it would be advantageous to begin with a WIT Jail ministry as I did and I pray you will!  From my observations, following are some obstacles you may encounter and some suggestions on how to overcome them.

The jail is run with a tight fist, as it should be.  It not only requires a thorough background check but may require special training to become a "monthly religious volunteer." Every situation is different. 

From my observations, I have listed some obstacles and procedures that may be helpful in starting a WIT Jail Ministry. There are several other obstacles to overcome you should be aware of. 

1. Some jails may not allow religious volunteers at this time.
2. The jail may be small in numbers and the present chaplain feels he is adequate.
3. There may be a maximum number of religious volunteers, and at present, they are full.
4. Jail requirements do not allow those with criminal records of any kind to participate. This may eliminate some of your WIT women from participating.

Never fear, with God there is always a way.  I suggest you do one or more of the following:

1. Call the Sheriff's secretary and ask her for the proper procedures to become a "religious volunteer."  Follow it! 
2. If you have a member of the Sheriff's Department in your church community that you are friends with, ask him or her, to help you become a "religious volunteer."  They will be an excellent reference for you as well.
3. Make an appointment with the Sheriff or Chaplain and express your desire to serve as a "Christian women's religious volunteer." Tell them all about WIT ministries and what the program can do for the women in your county.They may place you on a waiting list real quick!
4. Find out  which ministries are presently serving women in the jail. Call them. Ask for their recommendations on how to get into the jail ministry.   Ask for their good advice!  Share with them the plans and goals of your  WIT Ministry.

Remember, do not get discouraged while waiting!  We do "all things in the power of the Holy Spirit and leave the results with God!" As you pursue jail ministry,  organize the WIT Sunday School and get it going! You will discover there may be more women in your church and community who need WIT than you ever thought possible!
